March, 2003 SEVENTH EDITION

The current edition contains directions to 99 great collecting locations. Most are for minerals, but many are for fossils. Mineral species range from collectibles such as vesuvianite crystals, to cuttables such as rhodonite. Accurate maps are provided for most sites, along with detailed directions. Also included are lists of materials to be found, tips for the collector, and often information on other area attractions and conveniences such as places to eat or wash. Soon to be republished! Stand By!

As of date of publication of the seventh edition, all sites listed were believed to be still open. At this time we are only aware of three sites where the information needs to be changed:

The Day Quarry (Saratoga County) is no longer owned by Mrs. Fish. Current owner and collecting status are unknown.

Road cut, Fort Ann, Washington County: Route 87 exit is Exit 20, not Exit 19.

Bachelorville Quarries, Saratoga County: Previous owner has died. Current owner and collecting status are unknown.

An unsolicited review we received from a book purchaser:

Received your Rockhounding... several days ago; got around to looking at it today. As a professor of literature, I've been reviewing books a good part of my life, but I've never seen one that I'd stamp "perfect" before. Yours is a first.

I hasten to add that the parameters of my judgment are severely circumscribed. Books fall into categories, of course; yours would fall into some such slot as "special-purpose handbooks: Minerals; prospecting; by area." But I've seen lottsa volumes which would be shelved under that heading; none as meticulously detailed; as filled with practical advice: "look for mineral-stained quartz matrix," etc.

In short, hundreds of books have passed over my desk every year, many of them outstanding in terms of research; illustration; bibliography; etc. But in every case, however glowing my critical assessment, I've been forced to add one or more of the sounds authors shudder to hear: "But..."; ("Too brief in the matter of...."; "over-elaborated in two areas....:; "poorly documented re the topic of...."; etc.) For Rockhounding..., no "Buts." If 'twere very much longer, it couldn't serve its purpose, that of vade mecum. Shorter, and one or more important search areas would disappear from print.

....I say again, I have never before been able to make the one-word determination that I make for Rockhounding....: Perfect.

We're blushing!
